ALAN E SMITH, Ph.D, FRS, CBE


Dr. Alan E. Smith is the former senior vice president and the chief scientific officer of Genzyme Corporation, Cambridge M.A., where he had overall responsibility for the company’s science. Prior to is acquisition by Genzyme in 1989, Alan was the vice president and scientific director of Integrated Genetics, a M.A. start-up biotechnology company. From 1980 – 84 he was head of the biochemistry division at the National Institute of Medical Research, Mill Hill, London.

Presently Alan sits on the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Cancer Research Institute in Cambridge UK, of Pharnext, a start-up genomics company in Paris and of ImmuneXcite, a start-up immunology company, in Lexington, M.A. He is on the Board of Directors of Arecor, a start-up biotechnology company in Cambridge UK. Alan is chairman of the Board of Cambridge in America, the representative body of the University and Colleges of Cambridge in North America. Alan has published extensively on the genetic code and protein synthesis, tumour virology, cell biology and cystic fibrosis.

Alan holds a B.A. from Christ’s College, Cambridge, M.A. and a Ph.D. from the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, England. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of London and of Christ’s College.
