The Discovery group is seeking a highly motivated, collaborative scientist to join a team focused on building Candel Therapeutics’ next-generation oncolytic viral immunotherapy platform. Reporting to the Director of Early Research, this Scientist will play a critical role, supporting the implementation of a novel discovery workflow designed to achieve rapid proof-of-efficacy and streamlined development of new HSV-1 oncolytic virus candidates.


  • Establish robust cell-based assays pertinent to tumor immunology to support internal discovery platform
  • Design, plan, and independently perform a variety of in vitro and ex vivo immune cell-based assays to test novel oncolytic viral vectors
  • Design complex flow cytometry panels and perform flow analysis on immune and cancer cells
  • Document and organize experimental procedures and results; generate experimental reports
  • Synthesize and integrate results across experiments and present to colleagues and senior management
  • Work cross-functionally with internal key stakeholders including Vectorology and Experimental Medicine
  • Facilitate interactions with external partners and CROs to advance discovery programs
  • Contribute to a dynamic, fast-paced scientific culture that embraces creativity and innovation


  • A Ph.D. in Immunology or Immuno-Oncology
  • Experience in cell culture (both primary cells and established cell lines) and execution of a variety of in vitro/ex vivo immune cell-based assays
  • Expertise in assay development and troubleshooting for complex cell-based assays
  • Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience with advanced flow cytometry including panel design and analysis
  • Track record of high-quality, rigorous scientific work
  • Excellent attention to detail, communication skills, and flexibility
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, FACSDiva, and GraphPad Prism is needed for the preparation of reports to management
  • Previous experience with oncolytic viruses or gene therapies is a plus
